Hi all,
I wanted to do something good and make the world a better place. I love reading and when I found out that Wondermore is helping Boston students get access to culturally relevant and relatable authors, illustrators, and books, I knew I had to help. That's why I created a fundraiser to support their work expanding access to diverse and inclusive authors, illustrators, and literature.
What does that mean, you ask?
Wondermore is a small Boston-based nonprofit that connects Boston-area students to authors and illustrators who reflect our diverse and vibrant communities. They envision a world in which all children have the opportunity to see themselves in the books they read and are inspired to become lifelong learners.
This is how the Wondermore Authors-in-Schools Program works:
- Classroom teachers and librarians work with Wondermore to identify appropriate authors or illustrators to visit with students in coordination with classroom studies.
- Wondermore donates copies of the author/illustrator’s book(s) to each school ahead of an author visit, enabling teachers and library staff to familiarize students with the books in advance of the author/illustrator visit.
- Wondermore manages the logistics of each author visit and (in Non-COVID-19 times) accompanies the author or illustrator on the day of the visit. During COVID, and until visitors are allowed in schools once again, all visits are virtual.
- Wondermore purchases a copy of the author’s book for each child to take home.
That’s all amazing, but what I really love about Wondermore is the way they vet the books and authors they invite into classrooms. They introduce books to Boston-area students where:
- Any representation of culture is accurate, authentic, and multidimensional
- There is an absence of stereotyped representations of any culture or individual
- The identities of the main characters in the books reflect the identities of the people creating the stories
- The Illustrations (if applicable) are age- and subject-matter appropriate
I love that Wondermore’s programming is centered on books that represent a broad range of identities and characteristics and prioritizes literature that highlights the competencies and strengths of diverse communities and individuals. In a nutshell, Wondermore creates a welcoming literary environment in which all students feel a sense of belonging.
Who doesn’t want that?!?
